English Writing Tips (Part 2)

3. How to Use Pronouns in English

A pronoun is used instead of a noun or another pronoun. You should notice that the pronoun should be used as a reference to a reference that was previously used. In other words, it should be clear to whom it refers. For example, if you say “I talked to her”, you should probably have specified in the preceding sentences to whom “her” is referring to.

Another thing to keep in mind is that using pronouns should not confuse the reader. A pronoun whose subject is unclear complicates the sentence. So try to avoid this kind of problems.

Example: Mary talked to Jane after her piano lesson.

In this sentence, both subjects are singular and female, so it will be confusing for the reader which pronoun “her” is referring to. It is possible to replace this sentence with one of the following sentences to solve this problem:

After Jane’s piano lesson, Mary talked to her. (here it is clear that “her” refers to Jane)

Mary talked to Jane after the latter’s piano lesson. (here instead of using a pronoun, the word “latter” is used which refers to Jane)

4. How to Use Prepositions in English

Additional letters are very useful in English grammar. These letters indicate the relationship between two or more people, places, or objects. But they also have different uses that you should consider. Here are some simple examples of the preposition “at” which is the most commonly used preposition in English:

Mary and Jane are at the party.

Tina is good at Tennis.

They balked at the office.

Water boils at 100 C.

At 12, she was the youngest person in her class.
